Over 1000 students attended the Third Annual “Breastfest” of Champions this year at the University of Maryland, an event run by our Beta Kappa Chapter. The event focused on raising awareness of and supporting women with breast cancer, with an ultimate goal of raising money for breast cancer research.

Along with the feast the event had live music, the “Wall of Champions”, raffles, corn hole tournament, and business giveaways. Peggy Waterworth, a breast cancer survivor, and the mother of Greg Waterworth (newly elected Beta Kappa Number I), spoke to the attendees about the importance of love and support from family and friends, especially in the case of breast cancer. The sponsors included 31 of 36 Greek Organizations at UMD, along with the IFC and several businesses including: Gill Grilling, Party Party, Northwestern Mutual, Wynn Studios, On Cloud 9, Bagel Place, The Maryland Book Exchange, BookHolders, Southern Tide, Rita’s, and Red Bull.

Through a family letter writing campaign, shirt and wristband sales, sponsorship, and a raffle of donated items, the Beta Kappa chapter has raised over $31,600 for Hearts for Cancer. Hearts for Cancer is an organization created by an alumnus’ family after their good friend lost her battle against breast cancer 7 years ago. Hearts for Cancer has no administrative costs so all donations go directly to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories to fund research on a cure for breast cancer. Beta Kappa would like to thank all of the men and women who supported our fight to find a cure.

And the Order would like to thank Beta Kappa for all their hard work!
