Brother Wyche will speak to the entire attendance about values based leadership, reaching your potential, and related stories from his time in college, as an NFL quarterback and Super Bowl Coach.
Record Attendance!

With 230 attendees and more registrations coming in daily, this year’s Emerging Leaders Academy is proving to be the largest educational program the Order has hosted in close to 8 years. Check out this year’s chapter attendance HERE.

Almost a purely “elective” conference, ELA seeks to provide KA’s young leaders opportunities for personal and leadership development through peer facilitation, certified general sessions, track sessions on chapter operations, and various experiential learning opportunities.

Sam Wyche (Iota – Furman ’66)

VIDEO – NFL Films ranked Sam as the 9th Motivational Coach of All Time

Sam played professional football for the Washington Redskins, St. Louis Cardinals, Detroit Lions, and Cincinnati Bengals before retiring as a player in 1976. Sam began his coaching career with Bill Walsh and the San Francisco 49ers in 1979. He coached quarterback Joe Montana from his rookie year to the 49ers’ first Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl XVI. He was the head coach at Indiana University before taking the same post with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1984. Perhaps best known for introducing the use of the No-huddle offense as a standard offense, Wyche’s greatest achievement as a head coach was leading the Cincinnati Bengals to Super Bowl XXIII against his old team, the 49ers. Wyche’s 64 wins with the Bengals are the most ever by a coach in franchise history.

Sam is one of only four NFL veterans who participated in a Super Bowl as a player, assistance coach, and a head coach. The other three are: Mike Ditka, Dan Reeves, and Tom Flores. He ended his head coaching career in 1995 after four years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Over the course of his 27-year NFL career, Sam became one of football’s most respected head coaches, he has two division titles, a 1988 Super Bowl appearance, and NFL and AFC Coach of the Year awards to his credit. After his coaching career, Sam worked for NBC and CBS as a broadcaster and analyst for NFL games until 2000. In 2004, he served as the quarterback coach for the Buffalo Bills. Sam continues to provide advice for NFL and College Football teams. He will present A Motivational Coach’s view of Leadership.

Dave Baker (Beta Delta – Georgetown College ’79)

Check out This Week in the SEC with Dave Baker

Since 1982, Dave Baker has been a sports anchor, reporter and account executive at WKYT-TV, the CBS television affiliate in Lexington, Kentucky. Dave appears on air throughout WKYT’s line-up of news, sports and special events programming in addition to hosting a variety of University of Kentucky and SEC televised events.

2009 was Dave’s first season with CBS College Sports as host of the SEC Tailgate Show from various campus sites and in 2009-2010 he was part of the SEC’s new basketball television package broadcasting men’s and women’s games for The SEC Network, ESPNU, CSS and Fox Sports Net. Dave began doing events for the league’s syndicated broadcast package (Jefferson-Pilot, Lincoln Financial and Raycom Sports) in 1993. His assignments included host of the “SEC Football Today” pre-game show. During the winter he was a play-by-play announcer on Raycom Sports broadcast of SEC Basketball and the sideline reporter for the SEC Tournament including the Friday night in March of 2008 when a tornado hit The Georgia Dome while the tournament was in progress. Dave and other members of the broadcast team including CBS’s own Tim Brando kept anxious viewers at home and those watching in The Georgia Dome informed and reassured during one of the most unusual sporting moments in SEC History.

During the summers Dave continues to be a contributor on Raycom’s Football Saturdays in the South program. He is also the television voice of University of Kentucky basketball on The Big Blue Sports Network. In one capacity or another, Dave has been with Big Blue Sports Network for over 20 years. In addition, he has also broadcasts a number of other SEC events on television and the SEC Radio Network. He is a regular contributor at www.secsports.com.

Dave has a long history of community commitment and involvement. The Kentucky State House and Senate have honored Dave for his work with the Malt Beverage Education Corporation, a statewide organization that promotes the message to high school students about the dangers of underage drinking. Dave also served on Kentucky Lieutenant Governor’s Steve Pence’s task force that dealt with the issue of toughening laws and enforcement relating to sex offenders. The result of that work by the Kentucky Coalition Against Sexual Assaults resulted in the passage of Kentucky House Bill 3.

Dave is also a member of the board of directors for the Larry Gilbert Foundation First Tee of Lexington. Dave’s other civic “love” is the Children’s Charity Golf Classic. Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2009, the Children’s Charity Classic raises money for 30 different children’s organizations in central Kentucky. In 2004, Dave was named recipient of the Jose Ferrer Award, the group’s highest honor and the 2005 event raised a record 1.1 million dollars.

Dave is a 1978 graduate of Franklin High School in Franklin, Ohio and a 2005 inductee into the Franklin High School Hall of Fame. He’s a 1982 graduate of Georgetown (KY) College. Dave and his wife, Bethany, are the proud parents of daughter Madelyn, twin daughters Mallory and Macy, a son Manning, 2 cats and 2 dogs.

Kappa Alpha Order and the University of Arkansas have announced plans to restore the fraternity’s chapter at the University of Arkansas. The announcement comes after an extensive selection process involving national fraternities from across the country.

“Kappa Alpha Order has enjoyed a proud history at the University of Arkansas,” said Larry Stanton Wiese, Kappa Alpha’s Executive Director. Wiese explains, “Our national staff and alumni could not be more pleased with the opportunity to build on that tradition in Fayetteville. We wish to thank the IFC and administration for granting us and more so the students who will become members of Kappa Alpha Order the occasion to return.”

Kappa Alpha Order’s expansion director says this situation presents a unique opportunity for those interested in establishing a new chapter and joining a thriving fraternity system. “Our expansion process is specific. It is designed to bring the most positive aspects of the fraternity life to forefront of the chapter experience,” said Nick Palmer Director of Chapter Development, or expansion.

Among those important aspects are KA’s values of gentlemanly conduct, aiming for excellence, leadership and personal development, commitment to philanthropic and volunteer service, and a lifetime connection to a national fraternity with more than 500 alumni just from the University of Arkansas.

“KA’s return to University of Arkansas will be the opportunity of a lifetime for our new members,” said Palmer. “Our values will be found amongst the students at U of A. As an Order, we seek to bring those men, with our values, together and provide them with a unrivaled collegiate experience.”

Kappa Alpha Order (known as “KA” or “the Order,”) was founded upon the knightly principles of gentlemanly conduct and with excellence as its aim. Those values remain the focus of the Order today. Its first chapter was founded in 1865 at what is now Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. Kappa Alpha Order has grown to more than 120 chapters across the country, with a diverse base of undergraduate members. More than 150,000 men have joined the Order since its founding with over 117,000 initiated members living today. Kappa Alpha Order’s chapter at the University of Arkansas was originally chartered in 1895 and was the third fraternity founded on campus. More information about Kappa Alpha Order is available online, at www.kappaalphaorder.org.

Gregory R. Singleton
National Scholarship Officer

Dear Brothers,

As your national scholarship officer, I wanted to share some exciting news with you regarding the academic process of Kappa Alpha Order. In the fall semester of 2007, KA embarked upon a new direction with respective to the academic expectations for our members. Since that time, our collective fraternity grade point average has consistently risen each semester and we continue to break previous semester records! Both our spring 2011 and fall 2011 set new records for us.

Kappa Alpha Order is very serious about the academic success of our brothers. We expect that a chapter’s academic progress should be one of their top priorities, and with this goal in mind we have continued to set new standards that are soon to be implemented within each of our 123 collegiate chapters. Each of these standards, and recognition opportunities, has been communicated numerous times to the undergraduate membership at both national and regional leadership conferences. In an effort to continue our collaborative relationship, I wanted to share these with you, again.

Effective September 1, 2012, the Academic Standards in the right-hand column will go into effect.

Additionally, in order to continue to recognize the academic success of our membership, we have modified the criteria for our Certificates of Academic Achievement and created two new recognition opportunities, listed also in the right-hand column.

Kappa Alpha Order is most appreciative of the efforts of our Active Chapters, officers, and advisors. Collectively, we will continue to strive for excellence. If I can be of any assistance to your chapter, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Gregory R. Singleton
National Scholarship Officer

Alpha Omega Chapter set a goal to initiate 15 men into the Order for the fall 2011 semester. After a well prepared and executed formal recruitment, the brothers picked up 11 great men. Number I Forrest Brooks and Recruitment Chairman Dustin Brann decided that though they got 11 excellent men, they did not hit their goal of 15 and made the decision to do something about it.

They thought that since the campus culture was centered around formal recruitment (commonly known as rush), and the National Administrative Office was centered on recruitment (recruiting new members 365 days a year), why not do both? They devised a plan to change their 8-week new member program into two (2), 6-week new member classes. They would take the first class from the men they recruited during IFC Recruitment, and the second class would consist of men they actively recruited using KA’s 5-step system during the 6 weeks of their first new member class. The second class would start new member education right after the first class was initiated.

Recruitment chairman Dustin Brann said, “I thought it was going to be hard to get the chapter to back this idea, but since we had all agreed that we needed to get 15 men in the fall, there was not much they could do but support it.” Forrest Brooks, the chapter president at the time said “by taking 2 new member classes per semester, we are not only able to recruit more men, but we are able to put more emphasis on the ritual since we are doing it twice as much.”

So did Alpha Omega Chapter hit its goal of 15? They took an additional 8 men in their second class for a total of 19, exceeding their goal by 4. By using this simple concept, NC State brothers turned their initial 11 man new member class into a 19 man class in the fall 2011 semester.

So you want to try this at your chapter?
Great! Let’s see what can be learned from Alpha Omega. First, the chapter came together before the semester and agreed they needed to recruit 15 men. This commitment was made by carefully looking at who was graduating or leaving and also to making sure they recruited enough members to ensure steady growth. By having the chapter establishing this commitment, they had no other option but to fully support the idea after not hitting their goal for rush.

The 5 Steps to Recruiting (over 6 weeks)
*Note: The chapter divided its membership into recruitment teams that followed the steps below:

Names Generation: Active members were able to gather referrals from their new members and find other potential members who had participated in rush and not joined. Former recruits that were previously on the fence were able to see how the new member class interacted with the active chapter and offered additional names to put on their list.

Communicate: Members were able to reach out to their referrals through face to face communication, email, text, phone calls and Facebook to invite the potential members out to chapter events and to set up one on ones.

One on Ones: Alpha Omega held ones on ones with potential members over coffee and at lunch in the university center. They were able to inform their recruits the true values of the Order, and what the chapter itself was doing on campus. At this time chapter members were able to invite their potentials to meet more of the chapter at their events.

Chapter Events: There was no need to have the “recruitment event” because the chapter was already in full swing. Alpha Omega just invited potentials to the chapter events they were already having.

Close: Remember that during the 6 weeks the chapter is recruiting, you are able to give out a bid at any time. Bid discussions should be discussed at every chapter meeting as you are constantly meeting new men. Make the close formal and special to the potential member.

Additional Information
KA has a cherished tradition at UTA, and we look forward to a continuation of this tradition by building the absolute best chapter possible. Staff from the National Administrative Office have been on campus now for nearly a month recruiting the top leaders, scholars, and gentlemen on campus. The chapter at University of Texas-Arlington is officially recognized as a Provisional Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order. To ensure the success of this and any chapter, there must be support from the University, the National Administrative Office, and alumni like you. Here are a few ways you can help out.

Check out these pictures from the Induction Ceremony where twenty new men joined KA and UTA Provisional Chapter was created.

Here are just a FEW ways you can help!

Volunteer your time and skills – The skills you have acquired over the years can be very useful to the men looking to restore the Active Chapter and beyond, and it is our obligation as alumni to continue KA’s tradition of excellence by bettering the leaders of tomorrow, so why not better your own brothers? You could help with housing, present or attend a chapter meeting, or even mentor a chapter officer!

Housing – Area alumni will soon be starting a capital campaign to raise money to build a new house. If you have any experience with such an undertaking, would like to donate, or want to be involved, let us know!

Be a guest presenter at chapter meeting (or just attend!) – Chapter members love to see their alumni, and love even more to learn something from them. Give a short presentation at a chapter meeting about what you do professionally and relate it to your KA experience. Contact Andrew Carr at acarr@ka-order.org.

Mentor an Officer – Are you an accountant? Why not mentor the Number VI! Lawyer, mentor the Number VII! Use your professional experiences to better the your brothers and future leaders. Contact Gary Harnist at harnist@aol.com.

Get involved with the Alumni Association – Get back involved with the Alumni Association! The Arlington Texas Alumni Association is looking to start holding events such as meet-and-greet events, cookouts with the new chapter and many family outings to keep your KA spirit thriving. For more information, contact Alumni Association President, Gary Harnist at harnist@aol.com.

The Loyal Order and Forever KA – Join The Loyal Order and receive The Kappa Alpha Journal for life or become Forever KA, also joining the Loyal Order in the process, and help establish a chapter endowment account for Delta Iota through monthly giving program. The $18.65 per month you donate (after your Loyal Order membership is paid) is split between the Order, KAOEF, and a chapter endowment account. There is strength in numbers and if enough Delta Iota brothers become Forever KA, the chapter will ahve a permanent fund to send brothers to programs, conferences, and other educational opportunities.

By: Jesse S. Lyons, Director of Communications

With the onset of spring and the introduction of warmer weather, many campuses, Greek organizations, and our chapters find themselves in the middle of spring formal and social event seasons. While education and discussion about these points below takes place throughout the year in various forms, they warrant a reminder.

Many of our Active Chapters may plan a series of themed philanthropic or social events, a spring formal, or trips to other locations. Whether or not these include an “Old South” theme, there are a number of important points to remember.

Risk Management – You all have heard the policies, attended educational programming, and heard first hand the need for proper risk management. This is for safety, for protection, and for coverage. Please be your “brother’s keeper” and stay safe. Be an “Every|Day Hero” and step-in if you need to help a fellow brother or guest make a better decision and stay safe. Access the Kappa Alpha Order – Risk Management Policy and other resources here. REMEMBER – the Kappa Alpha Order Risk Management Policy applies to brothers at all times, on and off campus.

Special Events - Special events are defined as any event/function (1) where alcohol will be present, and the guest to member ratio exceeds three-to one;
(2) involving athletic events or competitions; or (3) that involves any activity that is deemed to be potentially hazardous by the Alumnus Adviser, the Alumni Advisory Committee, the Province Commander, the Executive Director, or the Order’s insurance broker. These will need Special Events Insurance. Please contact Stuart Whetsell (swhetsell@ka-order.org) with questions but note you’ll need a minimum of 60 days notice to apply.

Reputation – Whether it is the theme of your social event, the outfits or costumes you wear, or more importantly, your actions, others will remember everything you do. You know the Laws already. You know what is prohibited. Consider your attendees, your campus community, and others who might engage with your membership and guests at off-campus events. How would you like to be remembered—how would you like KA remembered?

Values – Reflecting back on our Order’s initiation ceremony and values will answer most of these questions. Please, have a great time. Enjoy your collegiate experience and have events that are social in nature. But remember the battle of reconciling your actions and values is one of the hardest you face in college. But choose your decisions wisely and try to remember them at the beginning, during, and after your social events.

Social Media – Be assured that if anything that happens at your events is going to make it online or into a social media feed for the entire world to see. Negative postings in reference to Kappa Alpha Order will be investigated. Thus, if you follow reasonable risk management guidelines, consider your reputation, and remember your values, every Facebook picture or tweet will be fine.

Brothers, be safe, have fun, and represent the Order well. Please do not hesitate to contact me, other staff members or your advisors with any questions.

By: Brent W. Fellows, Director of Educational Programming

Kappa Alpha Order has had two major conferences since January. The Number I’s Leadership Institute this past January 5-8 focused on empowering our Number I’s to effectively lead their chapter. Through planning their term, goal setting, small group facilitation and leadership development sessions, Number I’s were equipped with top notch training and supplied with numerous resources to assist them to lead their chapter this year.

Over 2,150 Kappa Alpha Members attended fifteen regional Province Councils this past January 28th – February 25th. Sessions included leadership, risk management, ritual, new member education, recruitment, membership education, and personal development training.

Now that everyone has traveled back to their chapter after attending our conferences it is our hope our members will continue to make a positive impact with their chapter. Everyone tends to get fired up with ways to improve their chapter. Unfortunately when participants return to their chapter it is difficult to share experiences and get everyone to buy into these ideas. Think back to the sessions you attended and review the below tips to help implement new ideas.

PROCESS

As you went through several sessions think about what you learned and how you can implement them into your chapter. What is one thing you learned that could make your chapter better?

PRIORITIZE

You simply cannot accomplish all of the new ideas you learned. Write down all of the valuable ideas you learned and rank them. Work on tackling the most important ideas first.

DISCUSS YOUR IDEA

Begin by discussing your ideas with someone that is close to you. Discuss your experience and provide the benefits of your idea that will result in a positive change.

FIND SUPPORT

Bring your close friend and share your experiences with other members highlighting the benefits of your ideas. Ask for their support as you bring this before the chapter.

MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Many ideas often lack follow through. Take charge and form a committee to make sure the idea is implemented. Bottom line – make it happen!
