Touching the heart of a family Todd Shelton | 11/19/2003 OSU Chapter recognized for caringWe would like to make you aware of the outstanding men of the Kappa Alpha Order at Oklahoma State University. Our son Sam, who is two years old, was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Distrophy earlier this year.
On Monday, August 25, 2003, an article about Sam and our efforts to raise money for the MDA telethon for the first time ran in the Stillwater News Press (Okla.). On Tuesday morning, we received a call from the men of Kappa Alpha offering to help us raise money by sponsoring a booth during Wednesday’s “Lights on Stillwater” event welcoming students to OSU. The men of Kappa Alpha contacted the local MDA chapter in Tulsa to obtain information, displays and MDA merchandise. On Wednesday night during the three hour event, the KA men raised $311 for MDA and Sam. They did this by collecting donations, having a putting contest, and auctioning homecoming football tickets. In just 36 hours, the guys put together a great booth and were our second largest source of donated money for MDA on behalf of Sam.
The men of the OSU Kappa Alpha Order were polite, resourceful and very caring. They truly are “men of honor.” We thought that it was appropriate that the national body of Kappa Alpha Order know about the OSU chapter’s outstanding effort on behalf of MDA and a little two-year-old boy named Sam.
Sincerely, Matt, Kris and especially Sam Hersom
