“As a 100-year old man was driving down the freeway, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife’s voice urgently warning him, “Herman I just heard on the news that there’s a car going the wrong was on I-280. Please be careful.”

“Heavens,” said Herman. “It’s not just one car. It’s hundreds of them!”

The Utopian Prince: Robert Owen and the Search for Millennium

by Floyd H. Duncan (Beta ‘79)

Robert Owen of New Lanark, Scotland, was a giant figure of the Industrial Revolution. He made a fortune in the cotton spinning businessÑturning cotton fibers into thread for the weaving of cloth. But his rags-to-riches story is only a small part of this incredible story. Robert Owen was also one of the most well known humanitarians of his day.

The Utopian Prince is a story that even today contains valuable lessons about the way we live and work together as human beings. Owen was at least a hundred years, maybe two hundred years, ahead of his time.
