Traylor is a former Knight Commander of Kappa Alpha Order and a past president of the NIC. Traylor’s distinguished career, life long service to Kappa Alpha Order, and interfraternal spirit are just a few of the reasons for this honor.

Professionally, Traylor has recently retired from a distinguished career at Texas Tech University, highlighted by his tenure as the director of the University’s International Cultural Center. A world traveler, he as visited over 80 countries on five continents as a researcher and official representative of the United States and international agencies.

Traylor’s interfraternal honors and awards are numerous. His fraternal service was capped by his service as Knight Commander of Kappa Alpha Order. KA members proclaimed that “Idris has been a pillar, advocate, and leader in every aspect of his career, both professionally and interfraternally.”  In addition to his leadership within KA, Traylor served ten years on the NIC Board of Directors, including a term as president.

In presenting the Gold Medal, NIC President Edward A. Pease read from the nomination letter submitted by Kappa Alpha Order. The letter said: “I would suggest that one of Dr. Idris Traylor’s greatest accomplishments would be that anyone who met him, when asked, would say he is a consummate gentlemen, an eloquent orator, ambassador par excellence, and foremost an interminable journeyman of life who leaves an indelible mark upon those he meets and those fortunate to call him friend.”

The Gold Medal was first presented in 1940 to recognize the long term service to fraternities provided by fraternal leaders.
