Knight Commander's Message, Fall 2004

Dear Brothers:

First, let me congratulate all of the award winning chapters from this past year.  I am extremely proud of the tremendous amounts of good work and strong efforts being shown throughout the country by our undergraduates.  It is my hope that those chapters recognized for their achievements will continue to strive for excellence on their campuses and that those who may have applied but missed out on an award this year will continue to work on improving their chapters in whatever areas need attention.

We concluded National Leadership Institute in Austin, Texas, one of are largest attend, and also our last, as we know it.  Over the years as we have expanded the educational opportunities for our undergraduates at NLI, we have also limited the number of active chapter members who can attend such an event due to the timing and expense.  As we look to the future we see more opportunities to teach greater numbers of our undergraduates through province councils around the country.  With the election of the officers being held in November of each year and the Number I's Leadership Institute in January, the other officers need training for their particular roles much sooner than NLI can provide.  By restructuring our province councils to meet specific criteria, we can provide more in depth training not only for the officers, but for all members of our active chapters.  This change was not without its challenges but the committee, led by Senior Councilor Mike Duncan, thought outside the box and devised ways to handle everything that we are doing now and in the future.  I thank this committee for its tremendous efforts in finding ways to better prepare all of our young men for their future as leaders.

As I mentioned in my state of the order address at NLI, the National Administrative Office has now relocating to Mulberry Hill.  We are all looking very forward to settling into our new home in Lexington, Va.  It is documented that Mulberry Hill is where Robert E. Lee spent his first night in Lexington, after arriving to take over as president of Washington College.  So it is very fitting that this becomes our new headquarters.

In addition to highlighting our award winners and our move to Mulberry Hill, this issue will also reflect on the sport of golf and our KA brothers.  I hope you enjoy this edition of your Journal and may you all have a very successful fall semester.  To our alumni, thank you for your continued support of KA and our many fine educational programs and remember that by joining The Loyal Order, you are helping to endow this publication.
