Collegiate Sports Update

GOLF

 

Completing an outstanding career for the Clemson NCAA playoff squad was Gregg Jones ‘00. For the season, he averaged 72.76 over 38 rounds (third-best on the team). Among his best finishes were third place at the North Florida Collegiate (215, including a 66); ninth at the Jerry Pate Invitational (205, including a 66); 14th at the NCAA East Regional; 19th at the Puerto Rico meet; and 21st (218) at the ACC tournament. Over his career, Gregg averaged 72.65 over 142 rounds, with 12 top ten finishes and 27 rounds under 70.

 

Two Duke KA’s played well this spring. Rob Beasley ‘01 averaged 76.3 over 21 rounds (low of 69); tied for 32nd place (221) at the ACC meet; played in the NCAA East Regional; and tied for 25th at the Schenkel/EZ Go Invitational. Teammate Tom Lefebvre averaged 74.3 over 18 rounds with a low of 67 during a 10th place tie at the Nelson Intercollegiate. Mike Daniels of Auburn averaged 77.11 over nine rounds with a low of 72 and Sam Sikes ‘01 of Richmond averaged 78.0 for eight rounds.

 

Daniel Sloan was the top shooter for Wofford, averaging 74.21 (low of 68) over 29 rounds. Among his top finishes were a first place tie at the Birkdale Classic; seventh place tie (217) at the Mission Inn Collegiate Classic; eighth place (215) at the Belmont Invitational; and a tie for 18th at the Southern Conference meet. Teammate Marshall Swails averaged 75.0 (low of 71) over eight rounds and tied for eighth (143) at the Seascape Invitational. Also playing for Wofford was Richard Cox, who averaged 76.64 (low of 71) over 11 rounds.

 

Noble Judy ‘00 shot a Furman school record 62 as part of his 210 total for three rounds in a tie for fifth place at the 49er Collegiate. He also tied for 19th (223) at the Adams Cup of Newton and had a season’s average of 77.4. Peyton Gallagher ‘02 of Davidson averaged 76.4 (low of 71) over 17 rounds. He tied for third at the CSU spring invitational and tied for 28th at the Southern Conference meet. Doug McKeever ‘00 saw action again for SMU.

 

Tommy Jensen was a leading player for Birmingham Southern, averaging 76.74 over 22 rounds. He tied for sixth at the Centenary Invitational and tied for 17th at the Big South meet. Josh Tompkins played well for Valdosta State with ties for 13th (220) at the South Regional; 14th at the Pirate Invitational; and 27th at the Gulf South Conference meet. Teammate Nathan Balanis also saw action. Playing for Delta State again was Matt Sellers.

 

A leading player for Georgetown was Adam Young ‘01, who tied for fourth at the Mid-South Conference fall meet and tied for fifth at the MSC spring meet. Teammate Travis Timberlake ‘02 also played well. Tying for 27th at the SCAC meet was Rhett Holland ‘01 of University of the South. Jesse Land ‘02 of William Jewell tied for 10th at the HAAC meet and teammate Joel Peace also played in the HAAC tournament. Other players on the links included David McDorman ‘03 of Westminster; Robert Kniesley ‘03 of Southwestern; William Freeman ‘02 of Transylvania; the Lambuth duo of Rodney Leath ‘02 and Jeremy Whitten ‘01; and the Newberry trio of Ross Bracket, Clint Martin and Hunter Mengel.

 

LACROSSE

 

Receiving All-American honorable mention from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association was attackman Chris Schaarf ‘02 of the 8-5 Hampden-Sydney squad. He was the team’s top goal scorer with 26, was second in scoring with 31 points, picked up 17 ground balls and was named to the All-ODAC second team. Another stellar lacrosse player was Wingate goalie Jonathan Coffer ‘02, who started 11 contests and made 155 saves.

 

BASEBALL

 

Named to the All-Ivy League first team for the 28-20 Princeton NCAA playoff club was Brian Kappel ‘02, who was also New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Relief Pitcher of the Year. He led the Tigers in appearances (24), saves (nine) and earned run average (3.19) while posting a 3-2 record and 42  strikeouts in 36.2 innings. Gaining All-Ivy honorable mention was outfielder Adam Balkan ‘02, who ranked third in batting (60 of 174) with 37 runs scored, 29 runs batted in and a team high 15 doubles. Also seeing mound duty for Princeton was Worth Lumrey ‘02, who had a 1-0 record in 12 contests.

 

Seeing action in the outfield for the 46-14 Stanford Division I playoff team was Cameron Matthews ‘03 and Gray Silva ‘02 saw some playing time behind the plate for Mississippi State. A leading hurler for Presbyterian was lefty Ryan Ariall. He had a 3-2 record in 15 games with 38 strikeouts in 40.2 innings. Two tri-captains had fine years for 21-16 Washington & Lee and earned All-ODAC first team honors. Catcher Bryan Mulhern ‘01 had a team high nine home runs; was second with 12 doubles; ranked third with a .360 average (50 of 139); and drove in 38 runs. He also pitched in 12 games, with a 3-3 record and 2.55 ERA. W&L shortstop Austin Allain ‘01 hit .304 (38 of 125) with 21 RBI.

 

Chosen as PAC Player of the Year for Bethany was outfielder Matt Raiti ‘01, the top hitter with a .384 average (team high 48 hits in 125 at bats), team high 29 RBI, co-high 28 runs, 14 doubles and three home runs. Also earning All-PAC first team honors was teammate Todd Welsh ‘01, the top pitcher with a 6-3 record, 3.57 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 58.1 innings. When not pitching, he batted .271 (19 of 70) at first base. Playing well in a reserve role for Bethany was outfielder David Goodwin ‘03, who hit .438 in 13 contests.

 

The second-leading hitter for Oglethorpe was All-SCAC honorable mention third baseman J.T. Baker ‘01, who hit .346 (45 of 130) with 24 runs and 17 RBI. He also pitched and posted a 3-4 record, 3.13 ERA, five complete games and 47 strikeouts. Teammate Charles Coke ‘01 started in the infield, hitting .247 (23 of 93), and Nick Cassell ‘02 was behind the plate in 12 games for Oglethorpe. All-SCAC honorable mention second baseman Nick Crawford was a key regular for 33-9 Millsaps, batting .323 (43 of 133) with a second-best 37 runs scored and 17 RBI. Seeing action for Rhodes were infielder Daniel Killary, who batted .288 (30 of 104) and pitcher Collin Schultenover ‘01, who was in nine games.

 

The 28-17 Southwestern squad featured seven KA players. A key pitcher was Matt Culling ‘03 with a 3-2 record, 4.06 ERA, and 48 strikeouts in 51 innings. Also on the mound was Cameron McCall ‘03, who posted a 2-2 record, two saves, 3.24 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 40 innings. First baseman Jeff Gabbert ‘02 batted .319 (29 of 91) with four home runs and 17 RBI. Third baseman Chad Wiley ‘02 hit .258 (32 of 124) with 32 RBI and first baseman Matt Davis ‘02 appeared in 20 contests for Southwestern.

 

Five KA’s were contributors at Washington College. Outfielder Jay McEvoy ‘02 gained All-Centennial Conference honorable mention after leading the team in batting (.351), hits (39), runs scored (30), stolen bases (26), walks (18) and on-base percentage (.447). Outfielder Jim Barossi ‘02 batted .328 (22 of 57) while infielder Mike Parton ‘03 hit .243 (26 of 107) with 18 RBI. Also playing the outfield were Walt Pyzik ‘03 and Howard Jones ‘02. Catcher Pete Starling ‘02 helped lead Transylvania to its best record ever (28-11) by hitting .315 (40 of 127) with 26 runs and 27 RBI. Ryan Brodecker ‘01 hit .260 (19 of 73) for Westminster as an outfielder and also won two games on the mound.

 

TENNIS

 

Birmingham Southern took its program to the NCAA Division I level this spring and had solid play from Richard Turner ‘01, who posted a 13-6 record in singles and 12-6 in doubles play. Donald Miles ‘02 was a good player for Davidson with an 8-5 doubles mark and 7-6 in singles action. Mike Riisen had a 5-4 singles record for Delaware and Tim Taylor ‘03 was 3-2 in singles play for Virginia. Jeffrey Farris ‘01 played well for Delta State, going 11-5 in singles play and 3-1 in doubles.

 

Patrick Morris ‘03 and his Westminster partner won the SLIAC #1 doubles title. He also played #1 singles and was SLIAC Player of the Week in early April. Tim Atkinson and his Transylvania partner took the HCAC #3 doubles crown for the second straight year, earning him HCAC Freshman of the Year honors. Seeing action for Hampden-Sydney were three KA regulars. Patrick Gee was 8-2 in singles and was named All-ODAC after placing second at #1 singles. Teammate Jonathan Schaaf placed third at #6 singles during the ODAC meet and Stephen Johnson was a regular at #4 singles.

 

Three KA’s saw a lot of action for Oglethorpe. John Esterline had a 13-7 singles record and was 10-10 in doubles. Also playing as regulars were teammates Daniel Close ‘01 and Drue Malone. Kevin Herrell ‘03 won the University of the South team’s Tiger Award and Reid Bruner ‘03 had a 4-0 singles record for Washington & Lee. Other players included Jason Brun ‘03, a regular for Bethany; Pat Stamos of William Jewell; the Rhodes trio of Kyle Kamrath ‘01, Scott Bayer and Nick Westbrook; and the Newberry quartet of Jim Gilliam ‘01, Rob Hindall ‘01, Oliver Elston ‘03 and Toby Rawlings.

 

 

TRACK AND FIELD

 

Middle distance runner Gene Douglass ‘03 of Mississippi had best times of 23.03 for 200 meters and 51.98 for 400 meters. Chris DeCamps ‘02 was a valuable runner for Furman, posting a top 800 meter time of 1:57.75 at the Emory Relays. He was also on the 3200 meter relay that placed third at the Clemson Relays and the fifth place 1600 meter relay at the Southern Conference championships. Other Division I trackmen included Robert Hulick ‘01 of Princeton, David Oyler ‘01 of Davidson and Matt Cote ‘02 of Appalachian State.

 

Russ Churchwell ‘01 had the best high jump and 100 meter time for the Oglethorpe squad. Teammate Joe Alzola ‘02 had the team’s best times for 800 meters and 1500 meters. At the SCAC outdoor meet, Casey Conley ‘02 of Rhodes was on the second place 1600 meter relay and was seventh in the 800 meter run. Teammate John Mowrey ‘02 had an eighth place finish in the SCAC 1500 meter event.

 

The William Jewell team featured three KA performers. Ryan Hartman ‘00 placed fourth in the 400 meter run during the HAAC outdoor meet. He was also on the second place 1600 meter relay and fourth place 400 meter relay. During the HAAC indoor meet, Ryan placed seventh at 200 meters. Versatile weight man Wade Smith did well at the outdoor HAAC meet, placing sixth in the shot put and hammer throw and eighth in the discus. At the HAAC indoor meet, he was fifth in the weight throw. Teammate Johnny Grice ‘02 also competed at the HAAC outdoor meet, placing 14th in the 800 meter run and being a part of the 3200 meter relay.
