Some of these learning methods include experiential learning, service learning, teambuilding, and scenario based learning, peer education and traditional methods of instruction.
Experiential Learning
Experiential learning is the idea of doing something for the sake of learning. It is a hands-on approach to learning that allows one to learn from experience rather than from a textbook. The benefits of experiential learning include:
- An opportunity for the student to interact with the world around him
- The enhancement of personal growth and self image
- The ability to work collaboratively with others on real problems
- The ability to understand complex problems and imagine creative, alternative solutions
- A chance to strengthen brotherhood by improving chapter communication and cooperation.
Service Learning
Service learning is a method of experiential learning where participants gain understanding through active participation in service projects that are conducted in the community. Individuals are placed in partnerships that provide the opportunity for effective service to those in need. These partnerships also create valuable learning environments for the students. A keen awareness of one's self and one's environment is attained through this unique combination.
Teambuilding
As a form of experiential learning, teambuilding works with a group that is unified by purpose, focused on a mission and committed to success. Successful teambuilding activities generally begin with a pre-program assessment of the group and the involvement of the team in designing the curriculum. This process reveals if a strong foundation is in place and it determines the programs approach.
Scenario Based Learning
Throughout The Crusade the student will be required to participate in discussion groups based on a scenario that has been presented by the phase commander. These scenarios are designed to stimulate discussion and debate. The scenario discussion groups can take place anywhere as long as the atmosphere is relaxed so people can debate and have fun. They are not to be treated as assignments in school.
Peer Based Education
One of the most valuable ways for a student to learn is from his peers. Peer based learning can be experienced in almost any form, but the true value is that it comes from a respected peer. Often times it is difficult to grasp a concept that is being presented by an authority figure. However, when the same idea is presented by a colleague it often appears more reasonable.
Traditional Methods of Instruction
The Crusade employs many different types of instruction; one of these is traditional memorization, test taking and textbook oriented learning. During several phases, the student will be required to take written tests on Kappa Alpha and it's laws and memorize passages from the customs of the Order. These tests are not meant to be burdensome, they are simply the best way to teach and evaluate comprehension of the material.
