With the foundation of the program rooted in the customs of the Order, the program strives to teach responsibility and self-governance while creating an interfraternal atmosphere.
Ritual Based
The Crusade is built on the very foundation of KA, the customs of the Order. This philosophical and values based foundation ensures that the program is successful and supported by the membership of the Order for perpetuity. No other membership development program that we are aware of spends as much time and effort concentrating on the ritual of the organization as does Kappa Alpha's Crusade. Today's catch phrase in the fraternal world is "we must return to our values and roots."
Kappa Alpha Order is committed to this principle by taking the first and most vital step and that is ensuring that our undergraduate members understand the complexities of our ritual. The Crusade constantly employs symbolism and ceremony at every opportunity to reinforce this valuable method of education and communication.
Self-Governance
The principle of self-governance is one of the greatest traits that can be learned through the undergraduate fraternal experience. We understand that members of our active chapters will make mistakes, however, how they proceed after the error is far more important than the actual offense Ð unless the offense is truly tragic. The lesson learned from error and correction will stay with the student well into his adult life, assisting him in parenting, civic involvement and business and social affairs. The Crusade is a flexible program unencumbered with pages of rules. Yes, guidelines are in place, but The Crusade is managed through self-governance and the continued personal pursuit of excellence and honor.
Methods of Learning
The Crusade employs every possible method of education with the sole purpose of keeping the program alive and interactive. Kappa Alpha continues to research every possible educational resource available. Some of the resources that are currently employed are:
- AlcoholEdu for College
- American Council for Drug Education & Children of Alcoholics Foundation
- Franklin-Covey
- Human Synergistics International
- National Interfraternity Conference
- Like Minded People
Support and Incentives
The Crusade is laden with incentives. We believe that any chapter that is willing to undertake such an important and dynamic program deserves extra support from the national organization. Thanks to the tremendous support of one alumnus and the Kappa Alpha Order Educational Foundation, The Crusade costs absolutely nothing to the individual or the chapter. KA continues to underscore its commitment to our crusade chapters and members. An average of $5,000 dollars of support is spent per chapter, per year in addition to KA's already impressive chapter services.
Interfraternalism
Kappa Alpha Order is a founding member of the North American Interfraternity Conference and our commitment to the Greek movement is unwavering. Throughout The Crusade we support interfraternalism and have set the following minimum expectations for our Crusade members.
- Attendance at one of the regional Greek conferences or at a school sponsored leadership retreat
- Attendance at IFC or SGA meetings
Additionally, Kappa Alpha also sponsors five UIFI scholarships per year for Crusade members.
