Councilor Russell C. Brown is a sixth-generation Texan. His maternal ancestor was in Sam Houston’s cavalry at the Battle of San Jacinto. He was born and raised in Lufkin, Texas, the oldest child of a school teacher mother and a father who worked at the local paper mill. Russell put himself through Texas A&M working summers in the mill. After graduating in May of 1981, he began work in Houston, Texas in the oil industry as a labor consultant. In September of that year, he began work on his MBA at Houston Baptist University. Through a high school classmate, and friends made at the Delta Kappa chapter of the Order, he was introduced to the brothers of Delta Sigma chapter. He was pledged in October of that year and was initiated into that chapter of Kappa Alpha Order in January of 1982. Work carried Russell overseas in 1983 and away from Delta Sigma chapter. When he returned to Houston in 1984, he met his wife, Kelly, and entered law school shortly after their marriage. Russell and Kelly have one daughter and two sons. Katy is a junior and a member of Tri-Delta at Texas A&M; Clay is a Freshman at Stephen F. Austin State University and a new member of Delta Kappa chapter; and, Tom is a sophomore and a member of the state-champion Henderson football team.
The Brown family are members of the First United Methodist Church of Henderson where both Russell and Kelly have served on numerous boards and positions of leadership in the Church Community.
Russell is board-certified trial attorney and, after 15 years with a prominent East Texas firm, he began a solo practice where he is national litigation counsel for a Dallas-based Fortune 500 company. He is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, the Order of Barristers and has been named a Texas Super Lawyer for several years.
He has been active in his community having served on the Henderson City Council for three terms and appointed Mayor Pro Tempore for most of those years. Russell is also a Trustee of the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas. He has been active in Freemasonry for over 30 years and was one of the youngest Masons in the United States to be awarded the 33rd degree by the Scottish Rite. He holds similar distinction in the York Rite, as well. He is a member of every active and invitational group in the Masonic Order.
Russell has served KA as an alumnus advisor of Delta Kappa chapter, a Deputy Province Commander in Walsh Province, Commander of Mikell Province and was elected to the Executive Council in 2001. He was elected Senior Councilor in 2011 at the 74th Convention. He is a member of numerous Courts of Honor, is a recipient of the Knight Commander’s Accolade, a member of the 1865 Trust, the Kappa Alpha Order Educational Foundation and has served as the Order’s ritualist for many years. He created and instructs the Stewards of the Order; serves as the Order’s Special Counsel; and, through his friendship with Bill Wood, has assisted in restoring James Ward Wood’s legacy as the principle founder of Kappa Alpha Order.
