Ragin’ Cajuns Revitalized – Louisiana-Lafayette (Gamma Phi)

The Gamma Phi Chapter at University of Louisiana-Lafayette with the help of staff and alumni, turned their future around. Coming off a one-semester suspension for poor academic performance, the team worked together to re-establish the chapter as THE fraternity experience at ULL. With a focus on grades, organization, and planning, the plan was set. In the end, 14 brothers added 19 new members and brought KA back to life!

Early this fall, two Associate Directors for Chapter Services, William Walker (Beta Tau – Mississippi State ’07) and Jake Howse (Gamma Eta – Florida State ’05), traveled to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette to help the then suspended Gamma Phi chapter restart and become  full functioning chapter. After the suspensions the chapter had only 14 members left. However, Jake and William were on site a month before the formal recruitment week to assist the members in resurrecting their chapter. Jake began by laying forth a plan for the chapter in a motivational speech inspiring the members to get moving. The effort began with Jake and William helping the members send recruitment letters during the early summer and call the IFC list of students one by one. Next, the staff and chapter spent 2+ days cleaning, painting, and repairing the chapter house in preparation of the upcoming year. The chapter and staff worked with several Greek Life/Student Affairs administrators and also two dedicated and influential alumni. Many more alumni were in support.

All of their tasks were done with an ultimate goal of a Thursday night “Back to School Barbecue” in mind. Soon the day of the barbecue came and everyone was very excited to get things going. Many Alumni and Administrators attended the event along with the more than 75 students. The barbecue was set up strategically with food, chips and dip, and cookies all in different places to encourage people to move around to places like the pool and foosball tables, basketball games, etc., all the time interacting with each other and the members of the chapter. There was a large white “wedding tent “set up in front yard with big wooden “KA” letters along with an informational/sign-in/greeting table on the front porch.

Overall the event was a huge success which led to the chapter CONTINUING the important recruitment process, taking new interested recruits to one-on-one dinners, more BBQ’s, and even intramural sports. This along with the several digital billboards around town led to the chapter signing 19 men on “Bid Day”. None of the chapter’s success could have been possible without a complete buy-in by the chapter, the key supportive alumni, and the assistance of the national staff.

We look forward to great continuing success of the gentlemen of Gamma Phi at Louisiana-Lafayette.
