Non Incautus Futuri: Preparing for the Fall Semester this Summer

By Greg Waterworth (Beta Kappa- Maryland ’10)

One of the many lessons we can take away from our spiritual founder General Robert E. Lee, comes from his family crest. The Lee family crest is emblazoned with the Latin motto “Non Incautus Futuri,”or in English, be not unmindful of the future. Strong leaders are always making preparations for the future, and as a leader in Kappa Alpha Order, your ability to utilize your time during the summer can have a deep impact on the success of your fall. Below are a few things you should do now, to be mindful of your chapter’s future.

  1. Schedule an officer retreat:
    1. Bring all the officers together to discuss the upcoming semester and plan some of the items below. Having a set agenda and inviting advisers to attend are ways to really enhance your retreat.
  2. Set Goals:
    1. What do you want to accomplish this semester? What does the chapter want to see? Set your initiatives for the semester and work diligently to achieve them.
  3. Prepare your finances:
    1. Use the summer to analyze your cash flow and develop a strong budget. It is also a great time to go through the chapter’s OmegaFi desktop, straighten out the chapter roster, and begin the 990 tax form. If you have any questions please contact your Associate Director for Chapter Services.
  4. Make your chapter calendar:
    1. The best way to prepare for the future is to make a comprehensive calendar. Consider things such as:
      1. Campus academic calendars,
      2. Sport’s schedules,
      3. Kappa Alpha Order National Administrative Office billing and programming,
      4. Recruitment dates,
      5. New member education dates,
      6. Social dates, and anything else you can think of.

If your chapter are able to do any of the above before the semester begins you will surely reap the benefits.
