KA_MDA_40th_LogoMWKappa Alpha Order has held a special partnership with the Muscular Dystrophy Association as KA’s national philanthropy since 1975.  This past year marked a historic year for KA, our Sesquicentennial, but it also marks 40 years partnered with MDA. Throughout 2015, KA chapters across the nation worked to make an impact in their local community; raising funds and volunteering for numerous organizations and charities. Specifically for MDA, KA chapters raised and donated a total of $119, 329 for research and support for muscle-debilitating diseases.

Zeta Pi Pumpkin PatchWe had 3 major fundraising events last semester. First, we held a golf tournament that raised just over 10,000 dollars. Anyone could play in the tournament but this event was especially important to alumni. We held a social event afterwards for everyone who attended the tournament. Second, we held a pumpkin patch on campus. We titled this Possum’s PumpKAn Patch. We basically took over the student union on campus for 2 days and sold pumpkins to everyone in sight. We decorated with hay and included a photo station with pumpkins painted in sorority colors. This was a big hit! Lastly, on St. Patricks day we do a shamrock event. We bring out our big wooden KA letters and MDA letters and sell paper shamrocks for a dollar. Every shamrock is placed on the letters and the goal is cover all of the letters by the end of the day. This raised a few thousand dollars.” -Elliott White, Number I at Zeta Pi Chapter

Dodging for Dystrophy“The Zeta Rho chapter of Kappa Alpha Order has really turned their focus on how they can impact MDA. Through new philanthropy events and fundraising activities, our chapter has branched out and refined our focus of raising money for MDA. The main event we did in the Fall semester was a philanthropy event that revolved around people donating money to sit in rocking chairs. We named this event, “KA Rockaway”. We were surprised by the massive amount of support we got from all the different organizations around campus. The spring semester however is the time we try to raise the most. The event we hold during the spring semester is called “Dodging for Dystrophy”. We hold an annual dodgeball tournament and usually get high praises for the amount of work and money we bring in. Each year, the event grows, and we are expecting our highest amount raised this spring. We are also trying to keep our alumni heavily involved with MDA. They support us greatly in most of our events and for that, we are very grateful.” -Logan Hilderbrand, Number I at Zeta Rho Chapter
