Kappa Alpha Order Alumnus Leads Study Abroad Program in Russia
Nicholas S. Gossett, PhD (Epsilon Alpha–South Alabama ’02), an assistant professor at the University of South Alabama, leads a study-abroad program in Russia every summer. He also just recently negotiated an exchange agreement between the University of South Alabama and the Higher School of Economics in Moscow.
“I’ve been to Russia about 15 times and have met a number of brothers over the years while living and working in Russia,” Nicholas said.
The agreement will allow students at the University of South Alabama to travel to Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Perm, or Nizhniy Novgorod) for exchange programs where they will study Russian language and culture as well as take part in an internship at our partner university. It will also allow the university to host Russian students every semester who will live in the new intentional residence hall and assisting in teaching the Russian language classes. It will open up opportunities for students in other disciplines to travel to Russia for internships or joint research programs.
“While in Russia I direct all aspects of the program,” Nick said. “I set up excursions to the UN, EU, US Embassy, Russia Direct (one of the only remaining free presses in Russia), Tolstoy’s Estate, a Soviet bunker, and many other places to extend the learning outside of the classroom. I also set up service opportunities for my students to meet peers their ages while traveling and studying in Russia.”
Nick teach courses on Russian language, Russian literature, Russian culture, international studies, and linguistics while in the US.
