Scholarship in Honor of J. West Summers IV Established for Delta Chapter
Since 1913, the Kappa Alpha Order has been an important part of the Summers family, as 12 men in our family belong to the Order. J. West Summers, IV (Delta–Wofford ’11), a second semester Senior at Wofford College, passed away on November 15, 2015. His parents, West (Delta–Wofford ’81) and Liz, and brother Rob (Delta–Wofford ’13), recently established a merit based scholarship in West’s memory and to honor the brothers of Delta that will follow in West’s footsteps. The scholarship is currently the only existing scholarship designed to directly benefit a Wofford KA.
While at Wofford, KA was where West was most happy. He valued the Order’s ideals and loved his KA Brothers. At West’s funeral, it was noted, how many KA’s, young and old, and from various Chapters were in attendance. His Brothers “…were forever faithful…” to him. The impetus for the scholarship’s creation is based upon West’s love for KA, his KA Brothers and the love and faithfulness West and his family received from the KA Brothers. West’s family hopes that his “footprints on the sands of time” and this scholarship will inspire the recipient’s passion for learning and a desire to excel.
“I knew West all of his life and watched him become the gracious, kind, generous, and caring young man that we all knew and loved. He was a shining star that brightened up any room he entered, and was engaging in every conversation, with peers as well as adults,” said Dr. V. Shaw Evans III, MD (Delta–Wofford ’84). “I am very grateful to have been able to spend time with him and am so happy that a scholarship has been established in his name that will benefit future young men who will follow in his footsteps at Wofford College.”
“West Summers was a true friend who was loyal and always up for an adventure,” said Cleburne Fant, one of West’s pledge brothers. “He was passionate in life and quick to defend those vulnerable in need for justice. He was a man who took pride in the United States of America and her Constitution. West would be the one in the room who stood in honor of our National Anthem even when it was broadcasted on the radio or TV. It will be an honor that a member of Delta Chapter will receive a scholarship in memory of West and that West’s legacy will continue to live on throughout Wofford College and the great State of South Carolina.”
West received his diploma in Philosophy from Wofford posthumously. West had a passion for learning and had a variety of interests including economics, law, public policy and sports. He was very personable and articulate, and was a great debater who enjoyed discussing a variety of issues with anyone. The scholarship is designed to assist Delta Chapter KA’s with similar interests.
Prior to his death, West began studying photography. Wofford held an exhibit of his work in the summer of 2016. West was an Eagle Scout, a Black Belt in American Karate and was a gifted high school cross country and track athlete earning regional and state awards. He served as a Crucifer and Acolyte Team Captain at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.
