Support Leads to NC State to Win ACC Hockey Championship
Parker Szarek, a member of the North Carolina State University club hockey team as well as a member of the Kappa Alpha Order, won the ACC club hockey championship in February. His team also had a perfect regular season at 22-0. With this perfect season, the team traveled to Lynchburg, Virginia in early March to play in the Southeast Regional Tournament, where they won both games by upsets. As of early March, they were the only college hockey team to have a perfect record on the season at 27-0. By winning regionals, they earned a spot in the National Tournament for the first time ever.
The most astonishing thing about the NC State Club hockey team is that no one is on athletic scholarships, they have no facilities provided to them by the University, and are provided no equipment. So, they created a GoFundMe page for supporters to contribute money so they could go to nationals. The goal was $35,000 dollars. They raised over $20,000 in just 7 hours. The Carolina Hurricanes team, a National Hockey League team located in North Carolina also helped with expenses by offering ticket promotions in their last game before the trip to Texas for nationals.
Despite their hard work and success the entire season, the team fell short and did not win the National Championship as they had wished, but it is simply extraordinary how far they got with what they had. When asked about their season and his experience with KA, Parker stated “It’s been a lot of fun being able to play hockey and be a part of a team that was so successful and be in KA. All my brothers have definitely supported me and have come out to a lot of the games and I’m hoping our team can be just as successful next year.”
