Beta Sigma Chapter Restored at Southern California
On Saturday, January 14th, 2023, Knight Commander C. Douglas Simmons III (Beta Tau–Mississippi State ’95) re-issued the Beta Sigma Charter to the gentlemen of the University of Southern California Provisional Chapter. The ceremony and banquet were held at Town & Gown Ballroom in Los Angeles, California, and were well attended by alumni, parents, staff, and volunteers.
Prior to the banquet, a house dedication ceremony was held at the chapter house. Bryan S. Roach (Beta Sigma–Southern California ’14) presented scrolls honoring Beta Sigma Chapter Olympians and student-athletes and remembering Beta Sigma Chapter brothers lost since COVID-19. Knight Commander Simmons presented Michael V. “Mike” Paulin (Beta Sigma–Southern California ’60) with the Knight Commander’s Accolade, the highest individual honor an alumnus can receive. Closing remarks were given by Former Number I Cole F. Schindler (Beta Sigma–Southern California ’23).
Since the provisional chapter was established on September 2, 2021, the provisional chapter has worked to recruit seventy-two (72) members while achieving a 3.52 Spring 2022 grade point average. Members have been involved with philanthropy and service efforts within the Los Angeles community and on campus. Throughout the course of the last academic year, the members have completed an estimated 1,080 of service during their time as a provisional chapter with organizations including Food on Foot, retirement homes, and participating in various blood drives. The chapter has raised over $2,000 for the American Cancer Society, Troy Camp, Pups without Borders, and Alpha Phi for their philanthropy. Members are involved on campus in club sports including rugby, basketball, and the ski team. Organizations for which members serve on an executive board include the Sports Business Association, Consulting Club, CTeen, Investment Banking Club, Music Industry Club, and TAMID, an international organization for students who want to contribute to the Israeli business, tech, economic and entrepreneurial scenes. Other organizations in which members participate include Trojan Investing Club, Daily Trojan, American Business Leaders, Kaufman Creative Dance, and Esports.
At the banquet Executive Director Larry Stanton Wiese (Gamma Omega–Midwestern State ’87) welcomed all attendees and gave opening remarks, KAEOF Trustee Mike Paulin led the pledge of allegiance, and CDR Lew “Jumper” E. Hoyt (Beta Sigma–Southern California ’62) gave the invocation. Following dinner, Number I Ethan T. Stubington (Beta Sigma–Southern California ’23) gave an address from the Chapter, Lew Hoyt gave a perspective on KA and Beta Sigma at USC, and Senior Councilor King V. Aiken, Jr. (Kappa–Mercer ’83) installed the chapter officers and presented them with their officer jewels. To conclude the evening, Knight Commander C. Douglas Simmons III gave his remarks and presented the Beta Sigma Charter, and Former Knight Commander Ben W. Satcher, Jr. (Delta Omicron–Clemson ’79) gave the benediction.

The Chapter Members were initiated on January 1st and 2nd at the USC Hotel by members of the Gamma Iota Chapter at San Diego State University and the Epsilon Tau Chapter at Northern Arizona University.
